I installed Ubuntu a week ago, and I've had few problems I couldn't solve. However, even after much trying I couldn't get my motherboard's onboard audio to output in 5.1 surround like my Windows 7 OS can.

Ubuntu simply claims my card is Stereo Duplex. I tried using drivers that I found online. The instructions didn't work one hundred percent, but after I somehow got through all the errors and compiled my new kernel I faced a command prompt interface (no graphics of any sort). I deleted my Linux partition, and installed Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition 64-bit fresh. After that, I remember seeing somewhere that I should install the package 'linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic meta-package' to enable 5.1 audio on my card. After installing it, the ALSA mixer had a new option at the bottom left: (I'm new to this forum, so I can't figure out spoiler tags to not break the page width, sorry) I checked the VIA website, and they say Smart 5.1 is a way to use the Line-out, Line-in, and Microphone ports as your three 3.5 mm outputs.

This is what Windows 7 does for my surround system, and it works. Of course, I enable it and turn everything on. I try a sound test (something in the terminal, I can't remember what) and it claims it's playing noise on all my outputs one at a time. I still only hear noise on front left and front right.

I try rebooting, making sure Smart 5.1 is enabled, and testing again but to no luck. I can't hear any surround sound. So now here I am, my first forum post! Hopefully somebody will be able to work me through this! Thanks a bunch in advance!

Here are my system specs, if it'll help: Operating Systems: Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition x64, Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Motherboard: ASRock N68-S Audio Codec: VIA VT1705 or VIA VT1708s (Not sure, Windows 7 says it's VT1705, Ubuntu 9.10 says it's VT1708s) CPU: AMD Athlon X2 Regor II 250 Video Card: nVidia 9500 GT Hard Drive: 640 GB WD Caviar Black Edition Partitioned to dual boot Win 7/Ubuntu with GRUB2 PSU: Eagle VoltasX 550 Watt. I'm having that exact same issue that you're describing. As it turns out, we're using the same motherboard (ASRock N68-S). As near as I can figure it, the audio chip on this board seems to have 2 parts - VT1708S, which controls a 2 channel mode, and VT1705, which is a separate part of the same chip that controls HD audio. Apparently, they require separate audio drivers. I haven't had much luck in finding info about the VT1705 part of the chip.

I suspect that the problem might be that it relies heavily on the windows driver software to work and there probably isn't an equivalent Linux driver for it out there. I'll probably have to take a look at the kernel audio driver list to see if VT1705 is listed, but I'm not expecting it to be. Now that I know there's someone else out there looking for an answer to this particular issue, I'll keep researching it. If I don't find a solution, I have a SoundBlaster Audigy SE PCI card lying around that I was previously using on my old PC that delivers HD audio flawlessly in Ubuntu.

Currently I am thinking about getting Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi, USB external sound card. Do any of you have some personal experience with it, whether it works in ubuntu or not. Or if you have suggestion about external soundcard which works well with ubuntu let me know.

Its running OK with the MS driver, but i miss a few things, like i have no sound if the headphones are plugged in, i was able to set it to ignore the head phone jack switch with the real VIA driver. Also had more control of the 5.1 sound, right now the back two speaker are very low compared to the others and i find not much control over that.

Maybe it is WPM. Not much info on this old motherboard and Windows 8 drivers. Here is the VIA download site for this audio chip set, VT1828S This is the Windows 8 Driver below, but it don't list my chip numbers but it does have some that are close. Maybe i will try this driver in a VM but the VM dont see the real hardware so it don't look like a VIA chip in the VM.

Update windows drivers from windows they will enable all settings and u will get updated driver for windows Well when i go to the device manager and select the device and then select update driver, it tells me there is no new driver. But that is only looking at the Windows qualified driver and not at third party driver that may not yet be qualified.

This would not install software that supports other feature but only the driver. Windows update did not look for hardware and i have ran and install all updates. After looking at the files of the new Windows 8 driver from VIA, it looks like it will work with my CHip even though it is not called out in the list at there web site.

I have found the device ID's in the setup files. I just need to get a good backup of my drive before i try it, and i am still looking for the right backup software at this time. This is an old thread but maybe someone besides me is still interested. I'm guessing that you could adjust the procedure if you're running a different version of Windows 8 or 8.1. You'll need to adjust the string in step 4 to the one your system complains about. 1 Unzip the downloaded file to a folder 2 Go to the 'NoHotfix' sub-folder 3 Save copies of AsusSetup.ini and AsusSetup64.ini (just in case) 4 Edit both to add a line that says 'WNT6.2P64MCE = Win764;Win 8.1 Pro (64 bit)' right after the Windows 7 sections 5 Double click the AsusSetup.exe file in that folder to install the driver and app 6 Reboot when requested.
