LyX is a document creator that allows to create different types of documents with desired layout. Includes rich mathematical functions (allows to insert and represent in your docs equations, algorithms, arrays and more), can organize your file (make an index and references to different sections), add tables, images and captions. It supports editing and creation in any language, including Arabic or Japanese. Supports import and export to different formats such as PDF, HTML, Word and more. Is available for multiple operating systems, allows to keep version history of your files with external SVN (version control system).

Mac is the only system on which you install LyX and try File/new from template, you find nothing. If the problem were missing LaTeX packages, you would see the template files listed, but they would not open without complaint. The LyX application folder contains the template files you need.
